End-of-Life Care
End-of-Life Care and Saying Goodbye
Compassionate Guidance Through Life’s Most Difficult Moments
One of the hardest parts of loving a pet is knowing when it may be time to say goodbye. At University Animal Clinic, we understand that euthanasia is a deeply personal and emotional decision made by your family. Our team is here to support you with compassion, honesty, and respect as you navigate this stage of your pet’s life.
Our goal is always to help pets remain comfortable and maintain their quality of life for as long as possible. When the time comes to say goodbye, we focus on creating a peaceful, dignified experience for both you and your pet.

Understanding End-of-Life Care
End-of-life care focuses on maintaining comfort and quality of life when a pet is facing advanced illness, chronic pain, or age-related decline. During this stage, our veterinary team works closely with families to monitor changes, manage discomfort, and help guide important decisions.
We may discuss:
- pain and comfort management
- changes in mobility or appetite
- breathing difficulties
- quality-of-life considerations
- how your pet’s condition may progress
Our team will always speak openly and gently about your pet’s condition so you feel informed and supported every step of the way.

Recognizing the Stages of Decline
Many families ask how to know when it may be time to consider euthanasia. While every pet’s journey is unique, some common signs that quality of life may be declining include:
- persistent pain or discomfort
- difficulty standing or walking
- loss of interest in food or water
- breathing changes
- withdrawal or confusion
- inability to enjoy normal daily activities
If you begin to notice these changes, our team can help you evaluate your pet’s quality of life and discuss the most compassionate options moving forward.

A Peaceful Environment for Saying Goodbye
At University Animal Clinic, we believe that saying goodbye should happen in a calm, private, and supportive setting.
We offer a dedicated comfort suite where families can spend quiet time with their pets. This private space allows you to say goodbye in a peaceful environment, away from the activity of the hospital. This peaceful space also has a separate entrance and exit to ensure families have the privacy they deserve during this difficult time.
For families who prefer an outdoor setting, our garden space provides a gentle and natural environment where you can sit with your pet, reflect, and share meaningful moments together.
Our goal is to give families the time and space they need during this emotional experience.

What to Expect During the Process
Our team will carefully and compassionately guide you through each step of the euthanasia process so you know what to expect.
The process is designed to be peaceful and pain-free. Your pet will first receive medication that allows them to relax and fall into a comfortable sleep. Once they are fully at rest, the final medication is given.
Throughout the entire process, our veterinary team remains present to ensure your pet is calm, comfortable, and surrounded by love.
Families are welcome to stay with their pet for as long as they need before and after the procedure.
Support for Families
Grieving the loss of a pet is a very real and meaningful experience. Pets are family members, companions, and a part of our daily lives.
Our team approaches these moments with empathy and understanding. We are here to answer your questions, guide you through difficult decisions, and support you through this process with care and respect. We can also connect families with grief and pet loss resources that may provide comfort and support during the healing process.
Aftercare and Memorial Options
After saying goodbye, many families want time to reflect and consider how they would like to honor their pet’s memory. Our team will gently guide you through the available aftercare options and help you choose what feels right for your family.
We work with trusted partners to ensure your pet is treated with dignity and respect throughout the aftercare process.
If you have questions about memorial options or would like time to discuss what feels most meaningful for your family, our team is always here to help.
