Avian/Bird Care
Avian Veterinary Care for Companion Birds & Backyard Chickens
Supporting the health, behavior, and well-being of pet birds through specialized veterinary care and owner education.
Birds are intelligent, social animals with unique health and environmental needs. Because their care differs from that of dogs and cats, birds benefit from veterinary teams who understand avian anatomy, nutrition, and behavior.
At University Animal Clinic, we provide veterinary care for a wide range of companion birds, from parrots and small cage birds to backyard chickens kept as pets. Our approach focuses on preventive care, early illness detection, and practical guidance to help owners create a healthy home environment.
Whether you share your home with a parakeet, cockatiel, finch, or a small backyard flock, our team is here to support both you and your feathered companion.

A Bird-Friendly Veterinary Environment
Birds are highly sensitive to noise, unfamiliar environments, and stress. That’s why University Animal Clinic includes a dedicated exotic animal exam and treatment area designed specifically for birds and other small species.
Unlike traditional veterinary spaces where birds may be surrounded by barking dogs and busy activity, our exotic animal area provides a quieter, lower-stress setting for exams and procedures.
Even small details were carefully considered. For example, cabinetry in the room is angled so that if a bird flies upward during handling, they cannot become trapped on top of the cabinets and can safely return to a perch or the floor.
By creating a species-appropriate environment, we help reduce stress for birds while allowing our veterinary team to examine and treat them more safely and accurately.
Birds We Commonly See
Our team cares for a wide variety of companion birds and backyard flocks. Each species has different dietary, behavioral, and environmental needs.

Why Regular Veterinary Care Is Important for Birds
One challenge of bird ownership is that birds instinctively hide signs of illness. In the wild, showing weakness can make them vulnerable to predators, so they often appear normal until a health issue becomes serious.
Regular veterinary visits allow us to monitor subtle changes that could indicate early health concerns, including:
- Body weight fluctuations
- Changes in droppings
- Feather quality and grooming behavior
- Appetite and hydration
- Activity level and posture
These small details can reveal early signs of disease that might otherwise go unnoticed.
What Happens During a Bird Appointment
During your bird’s visit, we begin with a full physical examination and record their weight. Weight monitoring is particularly important in birds because even small changes can indicate the onset of illness.
Depending on your bird’s needs, we may also:
- Examine feathers, skin, eyes, and respiratory health
- Perform grooming such as nail or beak trimming
- Discuss diet and nutrition
- Review your bird’s habitat and enrichment
We encourage owners to bring questions about diet, behavior, or housing. These conversations are an important part of keeping birds healthy.

Common Health Problems in Pet Birds
Birds can develop a variety of health issues, often related to diet, stress, or environmental factors. Some commonly seen conditions include:
- Respiratory infections
- Feather plucking or self-grooming issues
- Parasites
- Egg binding in female birds
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Overgrown beaks or nails
Because birds often mask illness, early veterinary attention is important. Prompt evaluation can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
Contact our clinic if you notice signs such as:
- Decreased appetite
- Sitting at the bottom of the cage
- Difficulty breathing
- Changes in droppings
- Feather loss or changes in grooming behavior
- Sudden changes in activity or personality
Avian Veterinary Services at University Animal Clinic
Our clinic offers a variety of services designed to support the health and well-being of pet birds. Each appointment is tailored to the specific needs of your bird’s species and lifestyle.
Wellness Exams and Preventive Care
Regular wellness checkups help establish a baseline of your bird’s health and allow us to identify potential problems early. During these visits, we assess weight, feather condition, respiratory health, and overall body condition.
Preventive care appointments are also an excellent opportunity to discuss your bird’s diet, cage setup, and daily enrichment.
Sick Visits and Medical Care
If your bird is showing signs of illness, we perform a thorough examination and discuss possible causes and treatment options. Because birds can decline quickly once symptoms appear, prompt evaluation is important when any behavioral or physical changes occur.
Nail, Wing, and Beak Trimming
Some birds require occasional grooming to maintain comfort and safety.
- Nail trims prevent overgrowth and reduce the risk of injury or snagging.
- Wing trims, when appropriate, may help reduce the risk of accidental flight injuries in the home.
- Beak trims may be recommended if the beak becomes overgrown or uneven.
These procedures are performed carefully to minimize stress for your bird.
Diagnostic Testing and Imaging
When a bird becomes ill, additional tests may be needed to determine the cause. Diagnostic services can include:
- Blood testing to evaluate organ function and detect infection
- Radiographs (X-rays) to examine internal structures
- Ultrasound imaging to evaluate soft tissues
- Laboratory testing for bacterial or fungal infections
These tools help us develop an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
Fecal Testing and Parasite Screening
A small sample of droppings can provide important insight into digestive health. Fecal testing helps detect intestinal parasites, bacterial infections, and other gastrointestinal concerns.
Behavioral and Husbandry Guidance
Many health problems in birds are related to environmental factors. During bird wellness visits, we may discuss:
- Cage size and setup
- Safe perches and enrichment toys
- Nutritional balance
- Social interaction and stimulation
Our goal is to help you create an environment that supports your bird’s physical and mental well-being.
Supporting Your Bird's Daily Health
Bird health is closely connected to their environment, nutrition, and social interaction.
Proper Housing: Birds need appropriately sized enclosures, safe perches, clean food and water containers, and protection from temperature extremes. Backyard chickens benefit from clean, well-ventilated coops and secure outdoor space.
Balanced Nutrition: Most companion birds thrive on high-quality pellet diets supplemented with fresh vegetables, while chickens require balanced commercial feed appropriate for their life stage.
Enrichment & Social Interaction: Birds are intelligent, social animals that require daily stimulation through toys, foraging activities, and interaction with their human families or other birds.
